Hosted by The Grove at Southpoint.

Having grown in popularity, this festival favourite is a collaboration between the South African Maker Collective, Fak’ugesi and British Council Connect ZA @ Fak’ugesi.  The Market Hack is a market day maker play space for you to have a cooler and actively play and engage with activities designed by the South African Maker Collective and the Maker Library Network (groups from Durban, Cape Town, Joburg, UK) and more local creative technologists. Come ‘pimp up’ your own chassis for a radio controlled racer; learn about 3D printing, VR, and talk to a playful voice translating robot.

Maker Library Network: Making Time Capsules from Space

Maker Librarians will collaborate to capture site-specific sounds, from the streets of Jozi, and interpret these in physical formats that will enable the public to interact, listen and interpret these moments.

This project will be led by Maker Librarians, Thingking and The MakerSpace as well as guest librarians Robyn Farah (KAT-O) and Tom van den Bon (Binary Space) who will mentor a group of young female engineers (electronic and mechanical) and programmers.  They will use phonopaper, spray paint and recycled plastic as the medium. Deconstructing sound and reconstructing it using various technologies including a smartphone phono app, robotics and CNC machining.

The materialized object will remain as a permanent physical representation of the temporal sound experience. The observer will experience the contrast between the organic nature of sound and the means of analogue representation through digital production.
