Festival Programme

Three Frequencies.
One Signal.

On 13 October 2026, Fak'ugesi African Digital & Innovation Festival ignites across Braamfontein, transforming Johannesburg into a living network of ideas, creativity, and innovation. The festival unfolds through three interconnected frequencies: Imagination Engines, Memory Engines, and Future Engines.

Fak'ugesi 2026 Curatorial Frequencies

African futures are not waiting to be imagined. They are already being built. Across five days of conversation, exhibition, performance, and experimentation, Fak'ugesi 2026 convenes the thinkers, makers, storytellers, technologists, and cultural visionaries shaping the continent's next chapter. The curatorial frequencies for the 2026 programme transform the festival into a platform for exploring how African ideas move from possibility to practice, from memory to invention, and from imagination to impact.

01

Memory Engines

African knowledge systems are not relics of the past. They are living infrastructures through which memory, language, culture, and identity continue to move.

Memory Engines convenes archivists, oral historians, technologists, curators, researchers, and community custodians working to preserve, classify, and transmit knowledge on African terms. Across archives, digital collections, language repositories, and community-managed platforms, the programme explores how memory becomes a tool for shaping the future.

What is preserved. Who decides? Who has access. These are design questions as much as cultural ones.

Memory is not storage.
It is infrastructure.

02

Imagination Engines

Across the continent, creatives and technologists are redefining the relationship between machine intelligence and human imagination.

Imagination Engines brings together practitioners working with artificial intelligence, generative media, synthetic sound, immersive environments, and emerging creative technologies. The focus is not on technology as spectacle, but on the people shaping its language, values, and direction.

What does it mean to build tools that understand African contexts? What futures become possible when the systems themselves are retrained?

The machines are already learning.
The question is from whom.

03

Future Engines

African cities, infrastructures, and digital systems are being built in real time, often ahead of global precedent.

Future Engines examines the networks shaping how people move, work, communicate, adapt, and imagine the decades ahead. Urban planners, climate scientists, policymakers, civic technologists, researchers, and systems designers gather to explore the realities of implementation, evidence, and scale.

From climate resilience and mobility to data governance and public infrastructure, the programme focuses on the systems through which futures become operational.

The future is not arriving.
It is under construction.
