LOUISE COETZER is a multidisciplinary dance artist working within the genres of site-specific performance creation, choreography for the stage, and dance film. Her works are experiential, experimental and innovative, and often have interdisciplinary collaboration and new technologies at their core. She is currently living and working in Cape Town. Louise is founder and artistic director of Darkroom Contemporary, a project-based dance theatre company formed as a vehicle to reimagine dance through its innovative approach to staging and presenting performance works.
Louise has choreographed an impressive collection of original works with a strong focus on the complexities inherent in human interaction and the exploration of alternative approaches. Her work has been showcased at the the Baxter Dance Festival, Zeits MOCAA, Centre For The Less Good Idea, Dance Umbrella, the National Arts Festival, Video Art Miden (Greece), 40 North Festival (Calif. USA), Foreign Exchange (Paris, France), Ubumuntu Arts Festival (Rwanda), Agite Y Sirva (Mexico), and Global Art & Moving Images (Pinsio, Finland). Her works featured in group exhibitions for Gallery MOMO and Puncture Points, and recent projects include developing full dome video content for the CCA & Iziko Planetarium Digital Dome, producing an interactive online dance film experience for the virtual National Arts Festival, and conceptualizing a new interactive multiplayer game for Darkroom Contemporary’s Ten Year Anniversary season.
Louise is guest lecturer at the University Of Cape Town Centre for Theatre Dance and Performance Studies and teaches as part of the contemporary dance faculty at the Cape Academy of Performing Arts.
