SUPERPOWER! is a series of workshops in different cities that explores our personal agency and responsibility as a citizen and as an individual in our complex interactions with our cities. Using wearable technology as an expressive interface, participants co-create body gesture sensing wearables that enable them to record their bodily interaction with the city. Past workshops range from mapping perception of safety in public space, cultural diversity, air quality to performing alternative empowering personas.
In SUPERPOWER! Johannesburg, we ask participants to consider their role as both the future generation and designers of their city. Participants will work in groups to identify common themes or concerns that ties to places around Johannesburg. They will then help co-create a series of IoT wearable devices that enable them to record their subjective perception of the city using gesture sensing technology. The activities will culminate in an outdoor exploration walk where participants will express and record their subjective experience using the wearable devices that catalogued their gestures. Based on the findings from the exploration walk, the workshop will end with a discussion among participants on how we can collectively shape our city through the use of technology.
