Building Braamfontein Block by Block in Mixed Reality with the City of Johannesburg, UN Habitat with Minecraft and Ericsson
In a special collaboration with the UN Habitat’s Block by Block project and Ericsson, the Johannesburg Development Agency and Wits Architecture are leading a project on community led urban design with technology in Braamfontein.
Since 2012, Mojang, the makers of Minecraft, and UN-Habitat, the United Nations programme for sustainable cities, have been collaborating on an innovative programme in which Minecraft is used as a community participation tool in the design of urban public spaces.
At Fak’ugesi Festival the partners are focusing on a community led redesign of “Eland Park and its immediate surrounds” in front of Noswell Hall on the corner of Jan Smuts and Ameshoff Street in Braamfontein.
On Friday and Saturday the 8th and 9th of Sept. the project will host a workshop inviting the local community, including students from Wits and Rosebank Colleges and other Braamfontein users to use Minecraft to redesign the park inline with their own needs.
Ericsson is one the primary sponsors for the Fak’ugesi Festival in 2017. Ericsson Research’s Strategic Design team is working on a mixed reality application to present a live view of the community’s design proposals in context, that is, out in the park or on the street. Selected design outcomes will be interpreted by Wits Architecture students for a showcase to be presented during the Fak’ugesi Festival.
Saturday the 16th Sept. Design outcomes, interpreted by Wits Architecture students will be presented in a showcase at the Festival finale Fak’ugesi Beats Party.
Participants of this project will additionally led a discussion on community led urban design with technology at the Fak’ugesi Conference (supported by Ericsson) on the 14th of Sept.
